In March, I had the opportunity to attend one of the most impactful conferences of my career — the American Society of Travel Advisors River Cruise Conference in Amsterdam.
Over the course of the conference, I connected with representatives from 12 different river cruise lines and toured 16 ships, each offering something unique for travelers. Having the chance to step onboard, experience the layouts, and compare the details firsthand is invaluable when helping clients choose the right fit.
I stayed aboard the brand-new AmaSofia, and it was exceptional. From the beautifully designed staterooms to the outstanding dining and attentive service, the onboard experience felt polished and thoughtfully designed throughout.
In addition to AmaWaterways, I toured ships from Avalon Waterways, Viking River Cruises, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, Riverside Luxury Cruises, Riviera Travel, Emerald Cruises, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, Tauck, Amadeus River Cruises, and Viva Cruises. We also got an exciting preview of what’s ahead from Celebrity Cruises as they prepare to enter the river cruise market — a potential game changer for the industry.
Beyond ship tours, we experienced onboard dining, entertainment, and educational sessions while also building strong relationships with suppliers and fellow travel professionals. These connections, along with this level of firsthand experience, give me a much clearer understanding of which cruise lines are the best fit for different types of travelers.
Following the conference, I boarded the beautiful Emerald Luna for a five-night sailing along the Rhine and Moselle Rivers. Our itinerary took us through some of Germany’s most charming destinations, including Düsseldorf, Koblenz, Cochem, Bonn, and Cologne.
River cruising offers a slower, more immersive way to experience Europe. There’s nothing quite like relaxing on deck with coffee or wine in hand while watching the scenery drift by. And with included experiences like guided city walks, brewery visits, wine tastings, and even bike rides, each day offers something new without the stress of constant planning.
One of the biggest takeaways from this experience is just how different each river cruise line truly is. While itineraries may look similar on paper, the onboard experience, style, and inclusions vary greatly. Having now experienced so many firsthand allows me to thoughtfully match each client with the right cruise line, ship, and itinerary for their travel style.
River cruising is also far more versatile than many people realize. It’s perfect for empty nesters seeking a European adventure, multi-generational families wanting a seamless experience, active travelers looking for immersive excursions, or those simply wanting a relaxing and enriching way to explore new destinations.
After two weeks focused entirely on river cruising, I came home with an even deeper appreciation for how varied and experience-driven this segment of travel really is, and I look forward to helping more clients experience it for themselves.
